How to Manage Your Manager and Leave the Office on Time
Oftentimes, a difficult and daunting task at work seems to be getting out on time in order to pick your children up from school or the babysitter before they close.
Many times, management treats workers as if we are owned, or have no life and that we can stay until a project is done. With single moms who are solo parenting, especially, this can often be a juggling act.
Here are some ideas on how to tactfully and delicately instruct your boss on how you can be an effective employee and still be out on time, even in crunch time:
• Accomplish what needs to be done at the office and ask to take work home that can be completed off site. Convince your boss that you can get it done at home and with technology today you can email, fax or bring the work completed by the next business morning. Whichever he/she prefers you can oblige. As long as it’s finished properly does it matter where it’s finished?
• Take a working lunch or a short lunch to accomplish the tasks. I don’t encourage this on a daily basis, but if it is crunch time and a large project needs to be finished your boss will see that you are making it a priority. This will only help your case when asking to take work home and finish it.
• Ask your boss to let you know ASAP if there is even a chance you may have to go out of town or out of the office on a business trip or meeting. This way you will have proper time to prepare a sitter or any other arrangements that are necessary.
• Let your boss know your situation and that you want to be successful at work as well as at home and you are open to thinking outside the box on how to be great at both. Express to your boss how import your job is to you and remind he/she that you are a great asset to the company. Articulate to your boss that you look forward to continued prosperity within the company and if they have any suggestions that you are definitely open to hearing any ideas on making the best work environment.
