What are Bio-Identical Hormones?
Natural or Bio-Identical hormones are exactly like the same hormones present in the human body and created by nature. They have the same molecular (bio-identical) structure as human hormones, therefore identical in activity. Bio-identical hormones are derived from a natural source, wild yam or soy plant. The plant hormones are converted by a biochemist to match hormones identically to those which were originally naturally produced by the human body.
In our practice, we have great success with our individualized approach. Every compounded prescription is a precise dosage needed for each individual patient. There is no assembly line manufacture of “one size fits all”.
The individual ingredients that are in your bio-identical formula are pharmaceutical grade, FDA approved natural ingredients. The composition, however is not FDA approved and will never likely be so. Your composition is designed to meet your needs in order to replace your deficiencies and respond to your body. We can not anticipate that one formula would work for everyone. When drugs are approved by the FDA, they are approved as a specific formula. This approval and use of one compound for everyone’s needs would truly undermine the purpose of customized bio-identical hormone therapy.
What are Synthetic Hormones?
Synthetic, conventional, patented hormones such as Provera, Premarin and Prem-Pro are artificial and chemically altered. They are not identical in structure or activity to natural hormones. Premarin (Pregnant Mares Urine) and other synthetics are patentable therefore profitable to the drug companies. Patents are not granted to substances found in nature. A pharmaceutical company will not spend billions of dollars to approve a drug through the FDA if the company is not guaranteed exclusive sale rights. Synthetic hormones are mass produced and often produce intolerable side effects.
What are the benefits of over the counter soy and yam supplements?
Our bodies do not have the enzymes necessary to convert plant hormones into human hormones. This process MUST take place at a biochemist’s lab with an individualized prescription only. Over the counter creams containing yam and soy will provide little to no amount of human hormones.
