Do You Have A Work-Life Plan?

Most people don’t.

If they do, it usually resides in their head and is only verbalized when someone asks what their dreams are.

When was the last time someone asked you what your dreams are?

Maybe you saw someone on the Oprah show asked or you once heard a motivational speaker who suggested you put your dreams in writing. But the last time you checked no one was standing in line to hear your dreams.

Be the first in line to ask yourself what your dreams are.
This is important because dreams are the fuel for your work-life plan. Stop and consider if your work and dreams intersect or if they are on opposite tracks.

How can you plan when you’re not sure what you want?
In my article, Do you love your work?, I talked about how to identify peak experiences. These are moments when we’re at our very best and this is a great place to start.

Chances are your dreams have just been covered up by past choices or your numerous responsibilities, but it’s not too late to float them to the surface.

Five Tips for Uncovering Your Work-Life Plan

1. Think about your dreams. Print this article and post it on your fridge or office wall as a reminder. Just thinking about it will create a radar system for identifying how your ideal work life and passions connect.

2. Identify your peak moments. When you recognize your peak experiences, also be aware of the people involved. Try to gauge whether their personalities refresh or drain you and why.

3. Jot down your peak moments. Keep track and keep them visible. Be specific. Over time, things will start to click.

4. Build your passions and dreams into your business or career plan.
Build your peak experiences into your work life. Look where your passions and expertise overlap and start there.

5. Consider writing out your work-life plan. This is a way of gaining clarity with your plan. Start with half a page and add to it. Ask yourself why you are headed in a particular direction. Is it because you really enjoy your work or is it only about a prior commitment, others expectations, or money?
